Do Long Commutes Indirectly Affect Your Marital Satisfaction?

D'Angelo & Grabow, LLP May 12, 2020

It takes a lot to develop a successful marriage. Things like good communication, honesty and respect can go a long way. However, there are many things people might not think of that could create tension between them and their spouse. According to a recent report, the longer your commute is, the more likely you are to get divorced.

This doesn’t mean that every spouse that has to travel 45 minutes or more to work has no chance of obtaining marital bliss. However, it can create issues in your marriage that are indirectly related to the commute.

Here are a few possible reasons it might affect a person’s marriage:

  • It’s harder to share parenting duties if one spouse is gone longer than the other.

  • Getting stuck in traffic can create tension and stress.

  • A longer commute may mean spending less time together.

  • The guilt some spouses feel from being away from their family may cause them to act out.

  • Longer commutes can sometimes lead to extramarital affairs.

  • Longer commutes can leave one spouse with more household duties to take care of.

There Are Ways to Make Things Work

Just because you or your spouse have a long commute doesn’t mean your marriage is doomed. There are plenty of ways you and your spouse can work things out if it’s something that’s causing stress or tension in your marriage. But if things aren’t changing for the better, you should consider your options.
